The Stage Co. is pleased and excited to be announcing that as of this October, we will be performing in our new home-The Varsity Center for the Arts.

Coming in October is Neil Simon’s Star Spangled Girl. Two Weekends: October 24, 25, 26 and October 31, November 1 and 2, 2008. Tickets go on sale October 10.

Just in time for the holidays is Daniel Sullivan’s Inspecting Carol. Two Weekends: December 12, 13, 14 and December 19, 20 and 21, 2008. Tickets go on sale November 28

In February, it’s Ken Ludwig’s Leading Ladies. Two Weekends- February 20, 21, 22 and February 27, 28 and March 1, 2009. Tickets go on sale February 6.

Noel Cowards Blithe Spirit comes to town in April. Two weekends: April 24, 25, 26 and May 1, 2 and 3, 2009. Tickets go on sale April 10.

Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30 pm. Sunday matinee performances are at 2pm.

Tickets are $15 per person for reserved seating. The box office is open weekday’s 5p-7p, Saturday’s 12p-4p and one hour prior to performances. Call 549-5466 for ticket reservations.

Plans for our 2009 Summer Family production are also underway. Dates have not been set but SNOOPY! The Musical! has been chosen.

All performances will be held at our new home The Varsity Center for the Arts, which is the former Varsity movie theater in Carbondale.

The Carbondale Park District has scheduled several youth events for the Winter Break period.

 

Parents Night Out is December 21 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to get last minute holiday errands accomplished. Register your child for an evening of swimming, food, and fun! Park District residents pay $12.50 per child; all others pay $15.50. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit and towel.

 

Wednesday December 26 and Thursday December 27, there will be a Youth Open Swim from 2:00 – 7:00 pm. Admission is $1.00 and a nonperishable food donation for the Food Pantry.

 

Fridays, December 30 and January 4, the Inflatable Slide will be up in the pool from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Regular admission fees apply; swimmers must pass deep-water swim test to use slide. Monday December 31, Wednesday January 2, and Thursday January 3 will have a combined open/lap swim from 3:30 – 6:30 pm at regular admission costs.

 

Friday Night $5.00 Family Swim is December 28 and January 4 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A family of four pays $5.00; additional family members are $1.00 apiece. An adult family member must accompany children. Siblings must be at least 21 years to qualify as an adult family member. All aquatic programs are held at the LIFE Center at 2500 W. Sunset Drive.

 

Scheduled for Thursday, January 3 is a trip to the SIUC Student Center Bowling Alley for kids in grades 3 – 8 (must be at least 8 years old). The van will leave the LIFE Center at 12:30 pm and return at 3:30 pm. Residents pay $15.00, all others pay $18.75. Fee includes transportation, bowling costs, snack, and supervision.

Registration for Junior Dawgs Coed Basketball League is underway! Registration forms may be picked up at the LIFE Community Center (2500 W. Sunset Dr.), the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale (250 N. Springer St.), the Carbondale Public Library (405 W. Main), and the Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau (University Mall). Anyone in grades 1 through 6 who has an interest in playing basketball is encouraged to register. Registration forms should be returned to the LIFE Center, the deadline is November 21, 2007. The Carbondale Park District and the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale sponsor the Jr. Dawgs League. The League is in need of volunteer coaches and referees. For more information, call 549-4222. 

The Carbondale Park District has scheduled a review class for people needing to recertify in American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. This course provides a review of the material needed to pass the written and practical portions prior to taking the recertification exams. Exams are offered at the conclusion of the review. Material from the recent upgrade will be included. This class is for people whose ARC CPR/AED-PR certification recently expired or will expire soon. The review is Sunday, October 28, from 2:00 - 6:00 pm, at the LIFE Community Center, 2500 W. Sunset Drive. The program fee is $35.00. For more information or to register call 618-549-4222.          

Are you 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career? American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start! Lifeguarding puts you in an exciting position, working as part of a team to help people safely enjoy the water. You could save a life too! Lifeguarding will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers. It’s a great way to demonstrate what you can offer. Colleges and employers look for applicants who can deal effectively with people, who have a take charge attitude, and who are willing to work to develop new skills. The Carbondale Park District has a lifeguard class scheduled to begin March 23, 2007. Prerequisites include 300 yard swim using breast/crawl strokes and a timed, underwater retrieval of a ten pound object. The fee of $125.00 includes instruction, text, and ARC costs. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive American Red Cross Certification. Classes are held at the LIFE Community Center, 2500 W. Sunset Drive.
