On June 25th the Pastor’s Third Appreciation will be celebrated at the Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

At 11:00 o’clock, the sermon for morning worship will be delivered by Rev. John Young, the Associate Pastor at Second Baptist Church, in Centralia, Illinois. At 3:00 o’clock, the sermon will be delivered by Rev. William Lash, Pastor of Corinthian Baptist Church, in Mt. Vernon, IL.

Rev. Sidney A. Logwood began his pastorate at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, on May 4, 2003. Prior to that, he had been Pastor of the Rain or Shine Baptist Church in Chicago for more than thirteen years. He received his ministerial training from the Chicago Baptist Institute and the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a licensed funeral director and worked in that profession before becoming a minister.

He is married to Hope Horace Logwood and they are parents of two children, Jonathan Edward and Jameela Faith; children from his previous marriage are Ivory, LaTonya, Sidney III and Taj Jibran.

Friday, June 16th and Saturday, June 17th, 2006, The African American Museum of Southern Illinois will be hosting its sixth annual Juneteenth Celebration. This is the oldest known observance acknowledging the end of slavery. 

June 16 - A memorial observance will be held at historic Woodlawn Cemetery located on Main Street in Carbondale. There will be a procession from Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 219 Monroe Street, to the cemetery beginning at 6:00 PM. The service at the cemetery will include laying a wreath at the mass gravesite of freed former slaves. There will be a wreath placed on the gravesite of Lewis Chambers, the only known African American Civil War Veteran buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Angela daSilva, owner of the National Black Tourism Network in St. Louis, Missouri, and organizer of the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing will be the keynote speaker.

June 17 - 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM all activities will held at Attucks Park on North Wall Street in Carbondale including: United Black Drag Racers will be showcasing race cars, music by DJ Genteel, dancing, storytelling, and more. Vendors and information tables on African-American issues will be available.

The 2nd annual Southern Illinois Music Festival features more than 40 performances in venues from Mt. Vernon to Cairo and Murphysboro to Harrisburg, including a six-concert series at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Shryock Auditorium. Musicians from throughout the United States, Europe and Asia perform orchestral and chamber music, opera, musical theater, jazz, patriotic and new music, in an informal atmosphere. Casual dress is welcome!  

This year the Festival celebrates Mozart’s 250th birthday with a wide array of his music, as well as a healthy dose of Brahms. Most concerts are indoors, but there are also several outdoor events, including performances at a Southern Illinois winery, music for summer solstice and the grand finale with 4th of July fireworks. A large number of events are free and tailored just for children, including Klassics for Kids and Jive with Jazz. New this summer is a regional Art Fair featuring award winning artists and artisans from throughout the region.The Festival coincides with a two-week summer music camp for high school students, a 40-year tradition at SIUC. Members of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra will be in residence.The majority of the Festival performances are free. Admission for other performances are noted on the schedule and ticket order form.
