Join the Carbondale Park District on Saturday, May 20, 2006 as we host our first ever Community Yard Sale at Parrish Park Parking Lot. Pack up all that “stuff’ that you no longer need and give others a chance to put it to good use. Your trash may be someone else’s treasure.
Spaces are available to community members for $10.00 apiece. No professional vendors, please. Food and drink sales are not permitted; tables and electricity are not provided. Spaces may be reserved at The LIFE Center beginning April 17, 2006. Reservations are due by 4:00 PM on May 18, 2005. Reservations taken after that time will be assessed a $5.00 late fee. Vendor setup will begin at 6:00 AM on May 20, 2006.
The Park District will taking enrollment for summer programs, and staff will be on hand to answer questions. The Park District has arranged for food and drink to be sold throughout the day. In case of rain, the event will be postponed until May 21, 2006

CeCe Winans 2006 Multi-Grammy Winner performs at Shryock Auditorium

Contemporary gospel artist CeCe Winans will bring heart-stopping pop, street-smart, R&B, and infectious dance-floor rhythms to Shryock Auditorium on Friday, April 7. This has been an incredible year for Winans. She won three Grammy categories, including Best Gospel Performance for “Pray” and Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album for “Purified.” This concert is presented by Shryock Auditorium, with local sponsorship from The African American Museum of Southern Illinois, Magic 95.1, and a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
It’s virtually impossible to talk about CeCe Winans without acknowledging her artistic influence on an entire musical genre and the groundbreaking achievements she’s accomplished over the past two decades. Blessed with one of the music industry’s greatest voices, CeCe has crossed all stylistic, social and age barriers with her inspirational delivery and powerful music.
Her industry accolades include eight Grammy Awards, 18 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and several gold and platinum-selling albums. CeCe’s collection of Top Ten R&B hits include “Count on Me,” her powerhouse duet with Whitney Houston, from the multi-platinum Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. The multi-format smash single sold 2 million copies and hit the Top Ten on pop, R&B and adult contemporary charts. Los Angeles Guitar Quartet performs at Shryock Auditorium

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is one of the most charismatic and versatile groups performing today. Recognized as one of America’s premier instrumental ensembles and winner of a 2005 Grammy Award, the group is popularly known as LAGQ. These four virtuosi bring a new energy to the concert stage with their eclectic programs and dynamic musical interplay. LAGQ will perform at Shryock Auditorium, Saturday, April 1.
Their inventive, critically-acclaimed transcriptions of concert masterworks provide a fresh look at the music of the past, while their interpretations of works from the contemporary and world-music realms continually break new ground. Their most recent release “LAGQ-Latin” received a Grammy nomination in the Best Classical Crossover Album category. “LAGQ-Latin” along with their two records for Sony Classical have appeared on the Billboard charts. The LAGQ continues to set new standards for the guitar quartet medium. Their third release, “Spin,” is due out March 28.

The Science Center of Southern Illinois, located in University Mall, Carbondale, is a hands-on children’s science museum designed for children ages 3 to 13. Come touch a Tornado, control a River and explore several interactive hands-on exhibits dealing with a variety of basic concepts of science, which entice the user to ask questions of the world around them in a fun and exciting way.
The Science Center is open 10-6 Monday through Thursday, 10-9 Friday and Saturday, and 12-5:30 on Sunday. Admission is $2.50 per person. Children 3 and under, Carbondale Park District Residents and Science Center Members are admitted FREE.
